Rear Admiral (Retd) AK Verma, after serving in the Indian Navy for 34 years, was appointed Chairman & Managing Director of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited, Kolkata on 01 Nov 2011. He is a product of Ranchi University and did his Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur in 1977. After joining Indian Navy, he did his Marine Engineering Specialisation course from Naval College of Engineering at Lonavla, Pune and Aeronautical Engineering course from Air Force Technical College, Bangalore.
During his career in the Indian Navy, he has held many prestigious appointments both onboard as well as ashore including Naval Headquarters, Command Headquarters at Mumbai and Kochi, Western Fleet and many operational ships and Air Stations. He has the unique distinction of being the only Officer in the Navy to have commanded both the ‘Aircraft’ and the ‘Ship’ Repair Yards at Kochi. During these commands, both the yards were also awarded the “CNS HRD Trophy” for being the best industrial units in the Navy for HR practices. On promotion to the Flag rank, he has held the appointment of ADGQA(WP) for 03 years prior to taking over as CMD of GRSE Kolkata. During his tenure as ADGQA(WP), he completely revamped the inspection organisation and improved the standard of all the machineries and equipment being inducted in the Navy for new construction ships at all the shipyards in the country.
A recipient of ‘Vishist Seva Medal’ for distinguished service, he has attended the ‘Senior Defence Management Course’ (SDMC) at College of Defence Management, Secundrabad and undergone the ‘Core Programme’ at Goa along with senior Army, Navy and the Air Force officers, which is the only course conducted in the Armed Forces for the officers of General rank and equivalent.
He is a strong believer in setting high goals and achieving targets through involvement of all personnel working with him. Managing men and motivating them to take on new challenges have been his strengths. On taking over as CMD, GRSE, Kolkata, he has embarked upon an ambitious plan to transform GRSE from being one of the best shipyard in the country to a truly ‘World Class’ shipbuilding organization.
